The Power of a Mirror: Reflecting on my Journey

A reflection in a mirror can hold immense power. Sometimes, our self-esteem dips so low that we perceive a distorted view of ourselves, clouded by insecurities and self-doubt. I once found myself with someone who constantly tore me down, feeding me negative thoughts that eroded my self-worth. The experience was deeply damaging, leaving me feeling lost and insecure. In these moments, it becomes difficult to recognize the true beauty that others often see. This distorted perception can overshadow our strengths and unique qualities. Although I am no longer with that person, rebuilding myself has taken tremendous strength, time and resilience. I’ve had to confront those negative beliefs and replace them with affirmations of my value.

It’s crucial to challenge these negative reflections, to remind ourselves that our worth is not defined by fleeting thoughts or critical self-assessments. Embracing our authentic selves allows us to see what others appreciate: our kindness, honesty, compassion, resilience, and individuality. By shifting our focus from self-criticism to self-acceptance, we can begin to appreciate the beauty that has always been there, waiting to be recognized. This journey of self-recovery has taught me the importance of surrounding myself with positivity and kindness, both from others and within myself.

I learned that you can’t always control everything in life, and sometimes God has a different plan for you. This realization has been challenging for me, and I’ve struggled to come to terms with it. I never envisioned being a single mom; I always dreamed of a family—mom, dad, and children—sharing life together. Letting go of that vision was one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced.

However, I’ve come to understand that all families look different. My immediate family now consists of just me and my two boys, and that is enough for us, for now. They are fortunate to have involved grandparents and aunts and uncles who actively participate in their lives. I hold onto hope that one day we might add another member to our circle—a stepdad/husband. Embracing this new reality has taught me to appreciate the unique bond the three of us share and the love that fills our home.

Finally, one truly amazing aspect of sharing my thoughts online in multiple platforms has been the overwhelming response I received. It was heartwarming to get comments, private messages and texts from classmates I haven’t seen in years, old colleagues from my first job, current coworkers and people from various stages of my life. As I read each message, I was constantly reminded of how blessed I am to have such uplifting and supportive people around me. Their kindness and encouragement reaffirmed the connections we share and filled me with gratitude. Thank you to everyone of you who took a moment out of your lifes to reach out.

Today, as I left Colorado, I felt truly blessed. I let go of things I should have let go of years ago and am at peace internally with myself. I’m headed home to my two boys-my family, where my heart belongs. Standing beside the three of us is an entire village of amazing people-super humans who are the kind you want in your life forever.
